Kyle Chastain, CEO of Professional Business Intelligence a Business Process Management and IT consulting firm servicing the Tampa Bay, FL area, had the pleasure being the featured speaker at the Brandon Chamber of Commerce. The Tuesday, December 6, 2011 event was part of the Biz Ed 101 series sponsored by Sunshine State Federal Savings.
The topic “Microsoft Excel for Managers” is a special class for manager level professionals. Managers need not be power users. Rather their skill set should include effective spreadsheet review and presentation techniques. Managers will be able to direct their subordinates on the proper use of workbook protection, workspaces and meta-data to make spreadsheets easy to find, understand, control and protect.
The importance of managerial control over spreadsheets cannot be overstated. Sarbanes Oxley, Basel III and other regulations have a direct impact. The possibility of a costly spreadsheet errors that cost millions, like the many reported in the news lately, is frightening. A simple spreadsheet error could be very damaging to a business.
It was an energetic class as Kyle noted: “It was a large turnout and the group was very engaged. We were able to cover a lot of essential skills and answer many questions. I always enjoy speaking at the Chamber of Commerce.”
Without a doubt, Excel is the most used application relied upon for financial reporting. Yet a recent study by a professional services firm showed that only 5% of employers require Excel training. Most users describe themselves as self-taught.
CFO’s have to balance risks versus the cost of controls. It doesn’t take a spreadsheet to see that Excel training that focuses on spreadsheet design, review, and control is an exceptional value compared to the risks.
